Woman pedestrian, 88, who died after Kuakini crash identified

Hawaii crosswalks - the deadliest places in the State. When will something be done? How many more seniors must be injured or killed?

These people are moving slowly and are in plain view. How in the world can you hit an elderly pedestrian unless you are not paying attention?! This is negligent homicide in an obvious form. C'mon people of Hawaii, put down the cell phones, don't drink and drive, and for heaven's sake pay attention!

Crosswalk is not in front of hospital, which may be why people tend to j-walk. there's a street. opposite the hospital, where cars turn right on to kuakini, and people tend to cross where car turns. sort of like a blind spot.

Plain and simple reckless driver or not paying attention.

Lovely sentiment, but the pedestrian crossed in the dark and outside of the crosswalk. I doubt the driver saw her until it was much too late. What would "far more discipline" accomplish? Better than a punitive system, which goes into effect after someone is already killed.... is designing roadways so they aren't pedestrian deathtraps. How often do you come upon crosswalks with extremely poor lighting, that it is impossible to see someone crossing because there's cars streetparked on both sides, because there's no light or push button hazard sign to tell drivers someone is crossing? You can roid rage all you want about punishing evil inattentive drivers, but that addresses only 1 of the parties involved, and threatening harsher punishment after the fact, barely addresses the problem.

These comments are all over the planet. As a senior citizen, I am increasingly aware of the dangers of Pedestrian injuries, not only from crosswalks, but from anywhere there are motor vehicles in proximity. Do you think you are safe when you are standing on the curb at Ala Moana Blvd? Does that curb really protect you from a car that fails to negotiate a turn properly. But it is sad to see needless lives lost by these more than expected and frequent incidents. My views coincide most closely with bobbob.....I think we all are to blame. I continue to be amazed at how distracted drivers (including myself) will allow themselves to get, while those crossing streets are not showing the level of concern they should - especially young people who are busy looking down and away, playing with their iphones, or distracted in some other manner. I realize these comments do not apply to an 80 year old crossing the street who has limited capacity to maneuver, and therein lies the challenge for the city and state to somehow acknowledge the need for safer conditions for our increasingly aging population of citizens - there are many strategies that other communities have employed which we should consider. And maybe that's what we should be concerned with before forking out billions for rail.

Very dangerous street. I guess that can be said for all of our streets drivers are not courteous.

Crosswalk? No crosswalk? I don't see one for at least 50ft. either way but it DOESN'T MATTER......Why don't we call it a RIGHT OF WAY. Pedestrians are the ones who are the disadvantaged in a showdown with a car!! Hawaii Lawmakers need to WAKE UP and create safer physical areas for pedestrians BEFORE the incident and not stiffer penalties AFTER the fact. Typical though as we live in a knee jerk reaction State with little foresight.

Having lived on Oahu for several years I can testify that everything is very compact there and in most instances, certainly not all, I believe that the driver is to be blamed in most pedestrian fatalities. Speed limits on city roads are set too high also for such a compact place, the police are much more visible it seems here in western Michigan where I now live which discourage speeding.

So, is the driver of the car that hit her will now be held for $100k bail like the Austrailian jet skier???

How come they took her to Queens when Kuakini is right there???

If she was in front of Kuakini Hospital...why was she taken ALL THE WAY TO QUEENS?

Sad news for both the driver of the car and of course the victim. I will pray for both families during this difficult time.

Pedestrian should watch out for traffic too, even in a crosswalk. Some just shuffle across like blind chicken not looking left or right. Those share some blame for their being run over.

I am so sorry for the victim and the driver. Whenever I drive past that location, I always see someone jaywalking, and to add to that danger, a lot of cars exceed the speed limit. It is so close to the traffic light at the entrance to the hospital, but a lot of people choose to jaywalk. Do they need a pedestrian activated light? It is so hard to convince the elder population not to jaywalk.

THE TROUBLING THING IS THEY ARE DEAD OR ARE DIEING IN RECORD NUMBERS,BUT THOUGHT THEY WERE RIGHT. I'M A DRIVER AND ALSO OFTEN TIMES A PEDESTRIANS AND SAFETY , SURVIVAL IS MY PRIORITY. SINCE THE LAW WAS ENACTED I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS CLOSE CALLS NEARLY STRIKING A PEDESTRIAN. HARD AS IT IS TO DRIVE A VEHICLE IN THIS HIGH VOLUME, CLUTTERED ROADWAYS, ADD IN POOR LIGHTING, WEATHER CONDITIONS, BLIND SPOTS, ETC. WE NOW PLACE PEDESTRIANS ON ROADS, THINKING A LAW IS GOING TO PROTECT THEM AS THEY ARE BECOMING MORE ARROGANT WHEN STREET CROSSING. CROSSING ON A RED LIGHT, STEPPING OUT IN FRONT OF MOVING VEHICLES WITHOUT EYE CONTACT, WEARING ALL BLACK IN THE DARK OF NIGHT, BEING TOTALLY INATTENTIVE AND AWARE OF SURROUNDINGS ETC , ETC. THIS LAW IS FULL OF FLAWS, PROBABLY WRITTEN TO PAD PLAINTIFFS LAWYERS AND TO MAKE INNOCENT, LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, EXPOSED BY THE MEDIA, INTO CRIMINALS.....MAYBE THE ONES THAT WROTE THE LAW ARE THE ONES HITTING AND RUNNING1111

Oahu is so crowded that serious consideration should be given to ban all passenger cars there. We moved away from there to the mainland because of it being too crowded, too noisy and too expensive there. SO SAD!! that this elderly woman died, SO SAD THAT SHE DIED IN THE MANNER THAT SHE DID.
