Freitas will not apply for athletic director opening

By Ferd Lewis

LAST UPDATED: 10:22 a.m. HST, Aug 16, 2012

Rockne Freitas, the University of Hawaii's acting athletic director, said he will not be a candidate for the permanent position.

"I'm not going to apply," Freitas said today. "Definitely not."

Freitas, UH vice president for student affairs and university and community relations, has been serving as acting AD since July 11 when Jim Donovan was placed on indefinite paid administrative leave. UH announced Sunday that Donovan would move to an as-yet-unamed position attached to the Manoa Chancellor's office. Tom Apple, the chancellor, said Monday that UH will conduct a national search for Donovan's replacement.

Freitas said, "the (AD) job is a challenging position and I like challenges, but I'm a vice president. I want to (remain) a vice president."

Freitas, a former All-Pro NFL lineman, had sought the AD job in 2008. He served as an associate AD at UH in the 1980s

Is the challenge keeping the athletic dept. alive in a hostile upper campus environment? Mahalo, Mr. Freitas, for holding down the fort anyway... I hope to see the day when the most qualified folks with pono motivations are allowed to serve our opio and communities.

Rockne has been working at UH long enough to know the difficult challenges the AD faces everyday with micro management from upper campus.

I'd love Keith to apply. He doesn't have the national or collegiate athletic admin experience but he's a really talented guy, as shown by his HHSAA days. Also, as Exec Sec'y for the Board of Regents, he's got the connections there that could help when the UH and Manoa bozos/yahoos start effin' with him!

The person I think would be a good AD is Dick Tomey. He was interested at one point, but I'm not sure he would apply at this point in time and given the condition he would have to work under, I wouldn't blame him. It will take a strong willed person to stand up the outside and inside politcal pressures to do the job, not another puppet. Good Luck in finding this person!

I think Dick Tomey would be great, he is in the CFA hall of fame, but is getting there in age, also there is Bob Wagner but will retire soon from KHS Hawaii, Blaine Gaison, Mufi Hanneman, Kale Ane, need someone with good admin skills, negotiator, very good relational social skills and a keen sense and vision of where we are going and becoming a great athletic program. Someone who is not building a name for himself but serving to build it great. Sheriff was a visionary and took us to a higher level, we need to get to the next level.

Ditto that. And, while I like and respect Kale Ane as a person and football coach, he lacks the skills to even be a high school associate/assistant AD. Admin skills? Nope. "Very good social relational skills"? Definitely not, one of the most socially awkward people in a position like that I've ever met.

false3. Is Dick Tomey still alive? Yup, UH needs a new fresh, young AD. Maybe uncle Dan might be interested.

There's been a lot of speculation around Rockne, most of it not favorable, and undeserved. The guy has done nothing but serve - regardless of that role.

Exactly. We would be damn lucky to have Freitas as permanent AD. Too bad people don't appreciate what the guy can do for UH Athletics. Let's pray Keith Amemiya is interested in the job.

Smart man. Freitas would be a fool to give up his current gig to take the AD job with all of it's challenges.

I don't follow the conspiracy theorists and their web of puppets and puppet masters. The anarchy at Manoa is far too chaotic for this to be part of any organized plan. The situation is more likely one of random potshots taken by various elected officials taking advantage of UH's staggeringly weak leadership. Freitas taking himself out of consideration is as big a red flag as I've seen so far.

Lack of leadership is an understatement. MRC Greenwood has apparently vanished into thin air as the ship slowly goes down. You'd think the president of the school would weigh in if only to show that someone is in charge over there, rather than send out scouts to take the arrows. C'mon, MRC...if you can't take the heat, you belong in the kitchen not the president's office.

Donovan should be placed back as AD. The BS starts from the top and the guy on the bottom (Donovan) gets the hit. Lets see what happens after UH outside investigation. The new Chancellor must have said to himself, "Whoa...am I glad this came down before I got here." After all is said and done, heads will be rolling. I hope It's not Donovan's.

No sense taking a job that you have to be accountable for .........what a zoo at UH.......has anybody ever thought about Apple's comment a couple days ago that when the report is finished reqarding the AD position at UH Manoa- that he will not be reviewing it and it will go to a higher authority- I thought he was the chancellor at the University of Hawaii Manoa - if he is not going to review and act on it- why did we even hire the guy- its so obvious that the Chanceller job of Manoa and the President of the University should be one in the same....and just to think Ken Mortimer did both jobs for $168,000 a year and now we pay $900,000 for that same job for two people and they don't even live in the Presidents Home and don't even understand the Islands.........all you can do is ask why the Board of Regents keep approving and allowing these sort things- how embarrassing for the people of Hawaii- a Board that allows the fondations money just to be spent frivolously on salaries instead of on the students and inproving the University which is what the fondation is suppose to be for and the donations that people make.

I wonder what the new AD's pay scale will be like? Seems like everyone new gets a hugh raise. And I don't understand why we have to pay MRC $5,000 to $8,000 in housing allowances, can't she pay the rent from her $500,000 salary. The rest of us pay the mortgage with our own paychecks. Speak up MRC. Are you even in town?
