Firefighters monitored and battled flare ups Sunday from a brush fire near Village Park, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

The fire was moving toward the freeway and Waipahu Street area instead of traveling up the mountain toward Village Park as it was doing on Saturday, Capt. Carlton Yamada said.

The blaze began Friday around 7 p.m. in a steep area of the gulch between Waikele and Village Park and singed roughly 30 acres that night.

It flared up around 10 a.m. Saturday and affected another 20 acres before firefighters called it under control around 3:30 p.m.

No structures have been threatened, and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters were expected to remain on-scene for an additional two hours.
