The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating the cause of an early morning fire that caused an estimated $60,000 damage to Waimalu Chop Suey at the Waimalu Shopping Center.

Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said that the fire broke out at about 1:15 a.m. in a storage shed in back of the restaurant on Kauwa Street.

The fire spread into the pantry and kitchen area, where a sprinkler system helped control the flames.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 1:42 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The restaurant is expected to be closed at least through the morning for cleanup and repairs.

Luckily no one got hurt. That shopping center needs to be inspected thoroughly by the fire dept. The building is about 60 years old. Vacant on the 2nd floor for many years. Parking lot is terrible. The complex needs a major overhaul.
