Saint Louis School graduate Marcus Mariota will be the first freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for the University of Oregon in 21 years, the school announced.

Mariota, a redshirt freshman, will open against Arkansas State Sept. 1 in Eugene's Autzen Stadium for the fifth-ranked Ducks.

The last freshman to start a season opener for the Ducks was redshirt freshman Danny O'Neil in 1991 against Washington State.

Mariota, a 6-foot, 4-inch, 211 pounder, beat out sophomore Bryan Bennett for the job.

Mariota has hit the big time - and as a second year freshman. This despite being stunted and sidelined by the St. Louis coaching cabal until his senior year.

Could you imagine that Saint Louis couldn't find a place on the field for JEREMIAH MASOLI? You tellin' me that that guy couldn't have played RB in the ILH? Jeremy Tabuyo barely sniffed the field as a sophomore, and this year Ryder Kuhns is the 3rd string QB. Saint Louis is still one of the best programs in the country to develop as a skill position player, but their personnel decisions are downright baffling.

St. Louis actually had an alumni strarting as a Div 1 quaterback at three seperate schools at the same time back when Timmy Chang was at UH, Arceneux (Utah), and Gessing (Wash State). How many HS's in the country can claim that?

Congrats.....coach Vinny Passes developed some good quarterbacks not just at STL but around the state at the high school level. Now Marcus has developed even more at the collegiate level. Good luck man.
