Oceanic unveils UH pay-per-view package with 16 events

By Ferd Lewis

LAST UPDATED: 02:34 p.m. HST, Aug 24, 2012

Oceanic Time Warner Cable will offer a 14-date, 16-event University of Hawaii sports pay-per-view television package, including six Warrior football games, the cable operator announced today.

The package will commence Sept. 8 with the second night of the Verizon Volleyball Challenge. The first football game will be the Sept. 15 Lamar University contest.

For Oahu, the price is $320 for renewal customers, $375 for new customers and $65 for single football games. Neighbor island rates are $160, $187.50 and $32.50.

Oceanic and UH will again offer a $85 "away game package" for UH season ticket holders.

"It has taken a while, but Oceanic Time Warner is pleased to offer a very robust package of pay-per-events to our Hawai'i customers," said Bob Barlow, Oceanic president.

Customers may begin placing orders by calling 643-3333 at 6 p.m. today. They can also be ordered through Channel 254 beginning Monday.

The PPV lineup:

>> Football (6). Sept. 15: Lamar vs. UH ; Oct. 13: New Mexico vs. UH; Oct. 27: UH at Colorado State; Nov. 3: UH at Fresno State; Nov. 24: Nevada-Las Vegas vs. UH; Dec. 1: South Alabama vs. UH.

>> Wahine volleyball (5). Sept. 8: UH vs. Idaho, and UCLA vs. San Diego State; Sept. 9: UH vs. UCLA, and Idaho vs. San Diego State. Sept. 29: UH vs. Long Beach State. Oct. 20: UH vs. Pacific. Nov. 8: UH vs. Brigham Young-Hawaii.

>> Men's basketball (1): Nov. 11: UH vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

>> Wahine basketball (2): Nov. 17: UH vs. Stanford. Nov. 18: UH vs. Baylor.

$300 for those games is a joke.

Neighbor island guys might buy in, but on Oahu they will get 11 subscribers. And the UH-Arkansas-Pine Bluff matchup in baskeball is certainly an enticing piece to the package.

Many in neighbor islands are hooked up to Satellite dish as they can't get cable in their area. So of course, they can't subscribe. And even if I could, I wouldn't. I agree with you, $300 is way too much. Even season tickets cost half as much.

I haven't purchased a UH PPV package before and the negative comments seem reasonable. But remember you will not be able to see these games live or not even taped, al least for a period of time. Also, if you do not renew, you will be considered a new customer next year when I believe the games may probably be better. Hope to see you at the games.

There's only a $55 difference between new and renew customers for this year. With much of the better games on national TV I can see why there are negative comments.

Good thing Donovan isn't AD. He'd be taking all kinds of grief for this lineup, and even more later when Oceanic demands a much lower rights fee and/or UH's local TV revenue or lack thereof starts hurting. Awwww, what the heck, who cares if Mr. Donovan isn't AD anymore. . . .this is Donovan's fault.

Who buys these packages anyway? They've gotta be kidding me. It's like the twenty dollar pizzas being hawked by that pizza joint that advertises them for ten bucks on the mainland. Same old same old Hawaii kine pricing. "Buy local, go broke."

Dish Network and DirectTV are great alternatives to Oceanic --- Corporation will screw the customer if they are allowed to --- remember, that is there mission --- nothing wrong with it, they want to make a killing from us ---- it is what it is --- don't EVER think they are your friend --- CANCEL if you find a better deal!

Lets see, $320 for 6 UH games? Its more than the cost of NFL Sunday for the whole season.

One more reason to turn our back on anything that starts with UH. Pay per view for away game? For a Divsion 2 (at best) team? HECO already has me by the short hairs; I definitley don't owe UH anything!

The UH negociates the PPV package with Oceanic strickly for the revenue generated. There are probably minimum $$$'s the UH will receive and Oceanic receives a percentage thereafter. If the gate is slow/poor at the stadium, the PPV numbers will also be low. There is also advertising revenue involved for both sides. Maybe the terms of this deal will be disclosed and then we can see how much moolah tax payers keep pumping into a white elephant.

All I want is the UH Football, which comes out to $27 per game. You take so long to come out with this so called ROBUST package, Oceanic needs to get onboard with the whole UH Football revitalization.
