Hawaii Red Cross volunteers heading to disaster area

By Star-Advertiser staff

Nineteen Red Cross volunteers from Hawaii are on their way to Louisiana and Mississippi to help with the Hurricane Isaac relief effort.

Coralie Chun Matayoshi, chief executive officer of the Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross,  said 13 volunteers from Oahu, Maui, and West Hawaii flew to Houston Wednesday night to a Red Cross staging area in Orange, Texas.

Another 4 volunteers-- 2 from Oahu, 1 from Kauai, and 1 from Molokai -- are leaving for Houston tonight.

They will go to affected areas once the storm passes and it is safe to travel.

Two volunteers from the Big Island leave Friday for Hattiesburg, Miss.

Matayoshi said, “Having Hawaii volunteers travel to disasters on the mainland will provide them with valuable experience to bring back to our state so that when, not if, the next major disaster strikes Hawaii, we will be better prepared.”

Donations to the Red Cross relief efforts  can be made by visiting www.redcross.org., calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation, Matayoshi said.
