Three members of the Hawaii County Police Department’s Special Response Team received the Silver Medal of Valor today for building a protective wall around a grenade in February and preventing a shutdown of Hilo’s main power plant that would have resulted in rolling blackouts over the Super Bowl weekend, police officials said.
The medals were presented to Assistant Chief Marshall Kanehailua, Lt. Thomas Shopay and officer Paul Kim during a private breakfast ceremony this morning in the mayor’s office.
