LIHUE >> Kauai’s Water Department can proceed with drilling for an exploratory well and construction of two water tanks to address a water storage problem.

The county Department of Water is proposing two half-million-gallon reservoirs to serve customers including Mahelona Hospital and Kapaa High and Elementary schools.

The Garden Isle reported today the Kauai Planning Commission gave the water department approval earlier this week to proceed.

Some commissioners expressed concerns about the permit to drill the exploratory well because of chemicals from a former pineapple plantation seeping into the ground. Commissioner Wayne Takayama says he’s concerned about farming rights if the well turns out to be productive.
