Four utility poles fell in Waimea town on Kauai today, prompting officials to shut down power to area residences and businesses while the poles are being replaced.
The affected poles on Waimea Road owned by Kauai Island Utility Cooperative fell at approximately 10 a.m. One struck a car, injuring the driver.
Spokeswoman Shelley Paik said the extent of the driver’s injuries are not known. He was treated at Kauai Veteran Memorial Hospital in Waimea.
Crew members shut power to 100 customers, primarily to homes. Officials hope to restore power by tonight. The cause of the downed poles is under investigation.
