Hawaii native Dave Nakama has been named the head baseball coach at San Jose State, the school announced today.

Nakama succeeds Sam Piraro, who retired in July after 25 seasons and 806 victories as the Spartans' head coach.

Nakama has 13 seasons of experience as an assistant coach in the Pac-12, split between Washington (2010-12) and Stanford (1997-98, 2002-09).

"San Jose State always has had a very good baseball reputation. I'm excited to continue this tradition and return to the Bay Area – a great place to work and live," Nakama said in a release.

"We're very pleased Dave Nakama is joining the Spartan family," SJSU athletic director Gene Bleymaier said. "Dave has extensive Bay Area ties and his coaching background makes him the ideal person to lead our baseball program."
