HONOLULU » Former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle and U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono are facing each other in the first of five general election debates in their race to replace U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka.

The Senate hopefuls planned to debate for about 90 minutestoday at a luncheon hosted by the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber is billing the event as a forum rather than a debate. It’s the first time the candidates have come face to face since Hirono won the Democratic primary and Lingle was picked Aug. 11 to represent Republicans.

The forum will include questions from a moderator without formal rebuttals, plus questions from the audience.

The candidates will debate four times on television in October, starting Oct. 8 on KHON-TV.

Will Mazie be able to complete a full sentence? Will anyone watch? Since Mazie has sold out to UNIONS does it matter?

Will Linda Lingle actually answer the questions or will she pull a Sarah Palin and just repeat her memorized responses.

Lingle stands for the dangerous radicalized Tea Party and tis desire to take us bad to war. She is perhaps the worst candidate ever to run in Hawaii.

Linda Lingle is so non-committal it is difficult to know what she stands for.

tea party? Jeez, did you bump your head? We got double puka this year. Mazie, (please tell me how to vote) Hirono, and Linda ( I'm a republican in name only) Lingle. Hawaii comes out the big loser in this one. Not to mention; Dan is going to become fossilized in office.

This is one race where Hawaii is a loser regardless of who gets in. Mazie has no record to defend and Linda is more about national politics than helping Hawaii. We lose, Hawaii.

I saw a Dingle ad last night that stated Mazie did not vote on a bill that would have helped out those with student loans. What's up with that?

Lingle was elected governor for two terms by the people of Hawaii and had to operate with a Democrat majority. After each year, she had to run the veto gauntlet by those who had other ideas on how to run the state. So you didn't like the results...
