No tsunami expected from 6.0 quake off Russian Far East

A 6.0-magnitude quake in the Pacific near the Kuril Islands of Russia is not expected to generate a Pacific-wide tsunami.
The quake occured at 7:39 p.m. Hawaii time about 280 miles south-southwest of Petropavlovsk, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Ewa Beach, has no warnings in effect.
The Kurils extend from Kamchatka to Japan’s Hokkaido island.
In November 2006, an 8.3-magnitude quake occured to the southwest of this evening’s temblor, generating a tsunami that hit the northern coast of Japan and caused damage in the harbor at Crescent City, Calif.
That was the largest earthquake in the central Kuril Islands since 1915, the agency says.
