A 1-year-old boy who died Saturday after he wandered into the ocean near Haleiwa Saturday has been identified.

The Medical Examiner's office has identified the apparent drowning victim as Coby Trask.

The boy was found unresponsive at a beach off Ka Waena Road, near the Rock Piles surf spot, just before 6 p.m., Fire Department spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada said. He was transferred to Kahuku Medical Center in extremely critical condition and pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m., according to police reports.

HFD received the initial call at 5:56 p.m. People at the beach found the child underwater. An off-duty lifeguard performed CPR on the unresponsive boy until firefighters arrived at 6:02 p.m.

Yamada said the toddler apparently wandered into the ocean.

Firefighters continued CPR until paramedics arrived and transported the child, still unresponsive, to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Yamada said.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death.

Not just a tragic loss of a beloved baby-child, but all the ohana that was to come. Makes me kinda "numb" to even think about. Wonder if this is the same Trask family. How could a 1 year old even be out of eyeshot for a second?! I'm just mulling it over in my mind too. So sad.

Very sad and no mention where the parents were or if they were watching the kids. I see it happen all the time with kids in the ocean and the parents not even paying attention. I am always watching my kids and someone else's. So sad story.

Baby was only 14 months old. How far or fast can a baby barely over 1-year-old walk or run? Especially on sand. Evidently no one was close to him. So sorry for the family, but any toddler needs constant attention especially on a beach with waves.

Agree, the parents need to be held accountable. It's really upsetting that the parents let this kid down by not keeping a good eye on him. I just hope the parents can live with their selfs if had other important things to do besides watching their 14 month old child while near a dangerous area (beach).

Where were his parents? 1-year-olds don't just run off into the ocean. They can barely stand.

My question exactly. Probably laying on the beach sun bathing with their eyes closed, maybe drinking with friends. everything except watching a baby who can you imagine, they are just learning to walk and walking in the sand? not an easy ask.

And why did he need to be identified? Was he just left on the beach to die anonymously?

Where were the parents is a darn good question.....!!!! How long since the drowning did they even know anything amiss....Seems like they were MIA for some time....?!?!?!?

This is tragic and it has happened to us. We lost track of our baby girl while sisters were playing. Mom was looking for puka shells. Along comes a stranger with the toddler carrying her bottle along Maili Beach. The waves were huge. We were so fortunate. Cousin's 3rd year birthday party and the tyke was found unconscious in the water at Kaaawa Beach Park. He survived without consequences. In both instances we were blessed. There are circumstances that just don't make sense. It only takes a second, like the candle flame. There are no words for the unspeakable grief. Events like this just happen.

false, you said it so well. It can happen, no matter how vigilant everyone is. I've had two close calls with my son wandering away. Luck was with us, though. I can't put the blame on the family. They're going thru unspeakable grief. Rest in peace, young baby.
