KAILUA-KONA » A Big Island man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for setting himself on fire on Valentine's Day and trying to do the same to his ex-girlfriend.

Robert York, 27, was sentenced Monday to up to 10 years. He had previously pleaded guilty to kidnapping, second-degree arson, felony abuse and first-degree terroristic threatening. He was also ordered to pay more than $2,000 in restitution.

Police say he set his ex-girlfriend's porch on fire on Feb. 14 and then doused her and himself with flammable liquid. After relatives pulled York away from the woman, he set himself on fire.

York was arrested after being released from a hospital. The woman did not require medical attention for injuries sustained in the struggle with York.

West Hawaii Today reports he apologized to his ex-girlfriend in court.

Its a sad case regarding relationship, specifically one partner failure to understand that once the relationship fire sparks dies, its over; time to move on. But some people just don't know how to let go peacefully.

Self immolation only affect you, but to expect another to do the same is insane. Guess when someone is spurned, he loses his marbles and does dastardly acts beyond belief. Sad that it had to happen to anyone, let alone a young man just starting out in life.
