Man held on multiple charges after allegedly assaulting officer during arrest

A 21-year-old homeless man is in custody after he allegedly assaulted a police officer while being arrested for burglarizing a Ahuimanu home Wednesday.

Police said the suspect assaulted the officer and escaped while he was handcuffed, taking refuge in a nearby home. The tenant of the home confronted the suspect who fled with officers in pursuit.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault on a law enforcement official, first-degree burglary, escape, resisting arrest and breaking into a home. After being apprehended, the suspect also was arrested on suspicion of defacing the serial number of a moped, and several weapons and illegal drug charges.
