A 9-year-old boy and a man in his 30s were taken to Hilo Medical Center Sunday morning after a sudden surge of water swept them out to sea near Keokea Point in Hilo Bay, county fire officials said.

A bystander removed the boy from the water after the incident around 10:30 a.m., but the man was still in the water when crews arrived, officials said.

A rescue helicopter located the man, and a crewmember retrieved him from the water. A fire rescue crew removed the boy from the rocky coastline when they arrived and carried him to a medic unit.

Good ending to what could've been a tragic story. Shaka to the by-stander who was in the right place at the right time.
