By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 01:43 a.m. HST, Sep 24, 2012

Five people are spending the night outdoors after extreme river conditions left them stranded on the Commando Trail in Kailua, Maui.

Maui fire rescue personnel were unable to reach the party because of darkness and treacherous conditions and advised the hikers to remain where they are until rescue operations can begin again at first light on today.

The hikers remain in mobile phone communication with the rescuers.
