Stranded hikers return safely

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Five hikers who were stranded on a Maui trail Sunday made it out to safety with some help last night.

The hikers got into trouble after extreme river conditions stranded them on the Commando trail in Kailua, Maui on Sunday. After they called for help at 8 p.m., the Maui fire department dispatched fire and rescue units, but was unable to extract the hikers due to nightfall and treacherous conditions, fire officials said.

As he was very familiar with the area, the boyfriend of one of the hiker's mothers made his way up the trail and was able to lead the party to safety by around 9 p.m., according to the fire department.
