A contractor aboard a Navy supply ship off Hawaii was evacuated by Coast Guard helicopter Thursday morning after he experienced dizziness and dehydration.

The Coast Guard said in a release that the man was flown from the USNS Soderman to Hilo Medical Center.

A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point conducted the evacuation with support from a C-130 Hercules.

Coast Guard officials at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu were notified at about 8:50 a.m. of a contractor aboard Soderman requiring medical attention. A Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended the evacuation.

The Soderman is a preposition stock ship with the Military Sealift Command.

The command operates about 110 noncombatant ships, crewed by merchant seamen, that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions, and strategically preposition combat cargo at sea around the world and move military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners.
