Police unable to find out source of reported gunshot in Waikiki

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

A gunshot scare in Waikiki this morning sent pedestrians scrambling for cover, but police officers were ultimately unable to determine the source of the noise, the Honolulu Police Department said.

A couple visiting from St. Louis said they heard a gunshot and dove into some bushes on Kuhio Avenue near the King’s Village Shopping Center as a swarm of officers canvased the area with their guns drawn.

HPD Capt. Andrew Lum said that at 9:47 a.m. officers on special duty in the area of Kaiulani and Kuhio avenues reported hearing a gunshot in the area of Prince Edward Street, east of Kaiulani Avenue.

Traffic was stopped in the area for about 40 minutes while officers tried to locate the origin of the sound, Lum said. The area was checked with negative results.
