One person was killed and another was taken to the hospital with chest, abdomen and head injuries following a two-car collision in Glenwood on Hawaii island Thursday afternoon.

Hawaii County police said the accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. near the 20-mile marker on Hawaii County’s Highway 11.

A 33-year-old woman driving a van was heading towards Hilo when she broadsided a small station wagon, police said. The van flipped, landing on its roof.

The woman was taken out of the car by bystanders and later transported to the hospital.

The driver of the station wagon, described to be a man in his 50s, was ejected on impact and landed in a drainage ditch where he was found with no signs of life, according to police.

Highway 11 was closed for about four hours.
