Diaper odor gets mom, baby kicked off Seattle bus

SEATTLE » A woman is complaining to the public transit authority that a driver kicked her off a bus in Seattle because of her baby's stinky diaper.

Nichole Hakimian was taking her 1-year-old son to a clinic Tuesday because of an intestinal illness, KOMO News reported.

"He had just pooped in his diaper as soon as I got on, because he was having diarrhea," she said. "And right after that, she told me I had to get off the bus."

When Hakimian asked why she said the Metro Transit driver said, "Your baby, he smells really bad, and it's not fair that we all have to smell that."

"I said, 'My son is sick. I'm taking him to a doctor's appointment.'"

Nonetheless, the driver stopped the bus and let her out about a half mile from the clinic, she said.

Hakimian, who is four months pregnant, found a nearby place to change the diaper. She caught another bus to the clinic and learned her baby was suffering from a stomach bug.

She complained to Metro, and the King County transit agency is investigating.

"Based on reports, this appears to be a very unique situation. Our goal is always to balance the comfort of all of our riders with providing good customer service. We are investigating the complaint, and will get a report from the driver to confirm what happened and that proper procedures were followed," spokesman Jeff Switzer said in a statement to KOMO.

The bus ride made her feel sick, too, Hakimian said.

"I feel like I was being discriminated against and bullied. And it made me feel like crap. It really did," she said

Reason #1756 why I do not use public transportation: Dirty diapers stinking up the bus. Nasty.

Few number of years ago, a guy pooped in his pants while in the bus I was riding in, everyone covered their noses when the guy got up to leave the bus, yikes! But I still use the bus, LOL.

rode the bus to nimitz and when it stopped on hotel st, one of the riders walked out who had obviously defecated in his pants. wondered about the next person who would sit in the same seat.

Duh, that's why the seats are a corduroy brown and not a leather pearly white. Fabreeze does wonders!

I think it is good polilcy not to mention good courtesy to have ditry diapers changed before boarding a public transportation bus and if a child messes on the bus while in route and the smell is really bad, for them to get off the bus and changed before boarding another bus. It's not like they're being discriminated against, they're still allowed to use the bus. The same goes for adults too.

the least the driver could've done was provide a transfer, or a voucher for a free ride on the next bus to the mother's stop.

Agreed. I'd have given her my seat and two plastic bags. Sick baby? Bus transit? Have a heart. No one dies from smelling stink poop.My coworker was transporting a special-needs child in a new car. Aftrer pooping, the child dug it out and sprayed the car's upholstery with it. Some of it landed on the driver. Messy, but the driver washed off and the car was professionally cleaned. Smells like new again, lol.

This is just one of the chances you take when using public transportation. Everyone's idea of good hygeine differs, everyone's tolerance level differs. What's smelly to you may not be to someone else. People have babies and children who have "accidents." Other people have no idea what deodorant is. Remember Rod Tam? He tried to pass a smelly passenger bill through city council and everyone thought he was an idiot.
