Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii-Manoa will open on Saturdays starting tomorrow, according to the university.

Students and others who need access to the resources of the state's largest research library can now visit Hamilton Library between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The university announced that Chancellor Tom Apple and the administration secured one-time funding to provide Saturday access to the library during the spring semester.

The extended hours will run through May 11, 2013.

The library will still be closed on holidays and "Manoa Green Days." See the library website for details.

This is a University. Students live on campus. Why weren't they getting access to the library on the weekends? Studies, and homework don't stop on Fridays.

Where does the new money come from? One of the first things to suffer in bad times and the last to recover as things improve is library access. Is this a good sign?

It is astounding that this is a constant issue at UH. It was the whole time I was there and I'm not surprised to hear that the university still struggles to locate basic funds just to keep the !@#$!@# library open, but tens of thousands are falling out of the pockets of regents, the president, the chancellor, the athletic dept, and spent at the drop of a hat to pick up a consultant here and attorney there for the wonder blunder but a few hundred bucks to pay for student staffers to man the check out desk at the library - NO MONEY FOR THAT! What a disgusting joke.
