A 47-year-old man died Saturday after apparently suffering a medical emergency and crashing his truck into a fire hydrant and utility pole in Waikiki.
He was identified as Allan Vierra of Kaneohe.
According to police, he lost consciousness “due to a pre-existing medical condition” just before the crash.
He was taken in critical condition to a local hospital, where he later died. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
Two passengers in the vehicle were uninjured.
The crash, which occurred at about 2:30 p.m. in the area fronting 2163 Ala Wai Blvd., left the Ford F-150 truck resting atop the hydrant and against the pole. Water from the broken hydrant flooded the street.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada said HFD personnel were able to shut off the hydrant once the investigation was completed and the truck was moved. The street was closed for about two hours, with traffic rerouted via Seaside Avenue.
