An autopsy determined that a 35-year-old male Japanese visitor died Monday of saltwater drowning, Hawaii County police announced today.

Takashi Nakayama drowned while snorkeling in waters off Kaniku Drive fronting a resort in South Kohala, police said.

Resort personnel pulled the unconscious man from the water and attempted to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation, police said.

Nakayama was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
