A 21-year-old homeless man allegedly assaulted a police officer Thursday night, sending him to the hospital with minor injuries.

The police officer confronted the suspect just after 11 p.m. after responding to a report of a suspicious man in the Pawaa area. A witness had identified the suspect and when the police officer approached him, the suspect pushed him. The suspect fled and was stopped by another police officer on Cedar Street.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a law enforcement officer, harassment, resisting arrest and three contempt citations.

These sorts of crimes are way up. Homeless usually are quiescent and laid back. More are becomign very aggressive. I found on homeless man cursing a Micronesian guard (female) on campus. He lunged at her and shouted racial epithets. I called HPD and shouted back at him to leave her alone.
