PRP spending on election climbs to $2.8 million

The Pacific Resources Partnership Political Action Committee spent an additional $1.2 million from the end of the primary election to Oct. 22 in its advertising campaign against mayoral candidate Ben Cayetano.

The amount does not include $445,654.19 in unpaid expenditures made by the PAC, according to the latest PRP filing made today with the Campaign Spending Commission.

PRP’s tab so far this election is $2.8 million.

It spent $1.2 million up to the primary.

PRP is a trade name for the Hawaii Carpenters Market Recovery Program Fund, a partnership of the Hawaii Carpenters Union and the trade contractors that use unionized workers. Funding comes from the contractors who contribute based on the number of hours worked by unionized employees.

Cayetano has sued PRP, alleging its advertisements against him are distorted and false.

I m not for the rail being built ,but if the rail fails I would feel sorry for all the union workers who donated their hard earn monies for nothing, he if rail moves forward after the election if kirk wins good for the union workers and the big cooperate people who will be making millions for many years to come, unfortunately that would be on the backs of all the people of oahu for the nest 20 or so years and the real sad thing about it is that it wont have nothing to show for it..

The union carpenters DID NOT donate money to PRP. PRP is funded by unionized CONTRACTORS. A little reading of the article would have told you that.

The PRP announced today that it wanted absolutely nothing in return for its near $3 million support of rail and Caldwell. This announcement was followed by screams of laughter and high hilarity and the sound of Mike White screaming, "we just bought Honolulu Hale, baybee!!!!"

In other news Dan Inouye pretended not to notice that PRP has used his face and reputation in millions of dollars worth of ads variously described as "misleading", "despicable" and skuzzy" - and that was by the supporters. Thanks, Dan, you're a heck of a role model for political civility and respect.

Nearly $3 million to assassinate the character of a former state rep, state senator, lt. gov and gov. And for what? For a few grains of rice? For money? For PRP to buy the election to run a ridiculous rail project that will put money in their pockets but ruin the fiscal soundness and beauty of Honolulu. Mr. Inouye: please retire already. When you lie down with pigs, you get fleas.

PRP assassinated Caytano's character? He did that to himself just fine by his actions (or inaction). All the things that are being said about the cost of rail, beauty, etc. etc. were talking points back before the construction of every major freeway on the island, yet nobody seems to mind using them now. Plan for the future, that's what it's all about. You think Cayetano's BRT comes without cost, ruined beauty, etc. etc.? You have no idea how difficult things will get for the state when Inouye finally leaves office. But when he does, let's see who you'll blame for the LACK of federal monies being spent in Hawaii.

I agree with you on rail but not on Inouye. The man brings the bacon back to our state no doubt about that. The saying is "when you lie with dogs, you will wake with fleas". Or "when you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty"....you mixed your metaphors

Up until the PRP stuff I would have agreed 100%. Dan has been very, very effective at bringing the bacon. But this last episode of toadying for the union contractors and carpenters turned my stomach. He could have just said, "Hey guys, I am pro-rail and pro-Kirk but don't use my photo and imply I am a PRP stooge." But he did not do that. He kowtowed to the PRP and I do not forgive that - yeck, that was the stuff of first-time politicians trying to get elected, not a senior statesman. Everyone I know agrees that the PRP has poisoned Hawaii politics to a level; never before seen and I, for one, will call out old Dan anytime on this. It was beneath him and the stink can not be ignored.

Well said Maneki. You one of the best posters on here and you have my admiration my friend. I too had great respect for Inouye. Gave his right arm for this country. Has brought millions if not billions to Hawaii. He was a great man. But anyone who lies down with people like John White and PRP does not have my respect. What that group does is not pono.

Inouye won't retire for another cycle. If Lingle is still looming around after her defeat, we cannot let her sneak in. You know the GOP from Washington will be looking for a candidate. $$$$ will flow for Inouyes seat! He still has 2 more productive terms left. Especially now since Obama will get his second term. Rmoney is such a joke.

John's alter ego. A typo - is that all you got?

I scrape better stuff off my zori than the PRP puts out on the airways. btw, I'm actually a Dem thru and thru but that does not mean I hang my brain at the door. I recognize hypocrisy and the stink of petty politics and am not afraid to call out our hired help (politicians) even the esteemed old ones who sold their soul and reputation for the Crazy Train.
