Abercrombie names new press secretary

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 01:05 p.m. HST, Nov 01, 2012

Louise Kim McCoy, the former press secretary for Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle, has been named communications director and press secretary for Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

McCoy, a former television journalist, also served as spokeswoman for the state Department of Public Safety under former Gov. Linda Lingle.

The Abercrombie administration said today McCoy would coordinate communications strategy across the executive branch.

"Louise will be a valuable member of our team," Abercrombie said in a statement. "She's a dedicated public servant and her experience in both government and news will help strengthen our communication efforts."

McCoy replaces Jim Boersema, Abercrombie's former communications director, who left after committing to one year at the post. Donalyn Dela Cruz, the deputy communications director and primary spokeswoman for Abercrombie, is taking a position as communications director at the state Department of Education.

Instead of Press Secretary her title should be "Spin Master". That would be more reflective of what they do.

Exactly and she's got to earn it. Anytime the State or City can employ a person of her caliber, then that benefits us, the people of Hawaii. Would you rather hire a dead head when we already have enough of them?

You are probably right. Spin master job takes heavy toll on your sense of morality. It's hard to keep on spinning. You get to a point where start to believe what you are spinning.

The Governor's cabinet, in recent months (over the last year?), seems like a revolving door. I really wonder what's truly going on there?

She did so well helping Peter get his message out to the people. Just look at those election results. Yep, Peter sure had good press. I hope she does equally well with Neil.

Working with the City she was in the State Retirement System. She needs 10 years service to qualify for a State Retirement. Her benfits are limited however. Like many highly trained people, expect her to exit government service after she finishes her 10 years. This happens all of the time.
