WAILUKU » Democratic South Maui House candidate Kaniela Ing has been fined for what is being described as "simple mistakes."
The Maui News reports that the Hawaii Campaign Spending Commission fined Ing $375 on Thursday after getting complaints from the Hawaii Republican Party.
The fines are for failing to report expenditures for ads placed before the Aug. 11 primary in The Maui News, failing to file a timely loan document and failing to file a notice of a Sept. 5 fundraiser at Maui Meadows.
Gary Kam, the commission's general counsel, described the infractions as "simple mistakes."
Ing has 20 days to appeal.
Republicans have been attacking Kaniela Ing viciously for alleged campaign contribution violations and only these manini violations occurred?
I have not spent much time in the Kihei area in recent years and cannot pretend to know they dynamics of the district. But it strikes me as a swing district, seeing how Fontaine only took it from Joe Bertram because of Joe's health problems and his foolish defense of a friend involved in improper online behavior involving a minor.
Kaniela is an energetic, hardworking, intelligent and likable young man, likely to take down Fontaine. So the GOP resorted to a smear campaign in the hope of defeating him. I guess if it works for the PRP, it might work for the GOP. I hope Maui voters, and Oahu voters, punish those who resort to nasty, smear campaign tactics.
