Suit alleges rampant sexual harassment at Señor Frog's

Señor Frog's in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki closed its doors Sunday. Employees will be laid off as of Aug. 20.----------"They just were way over their head. Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is way too expensive for that kind of place."Nicole NiauFormer Señor Frog's cocktail server----------

A lawsuit alleging rampant sexual harassment of nine female employees at Señor Frog's was filed today by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The suit also names Altres Inc., a staffing firm contracted by Señor Frog's to provide human resources services and oversee non-management staff at Señor Frog's in Waikiki.

The EEOC alleges that nine female servers and bartenders were repeatedly harassed with sexual propositions, explicit sexual remarks, groping, grabbing, and exposure of genital areas by male managers, and even ordered to perform sexual favors for high-level Señor Frog's officials.

The suit alleges that the behavior was condoned by Señor Frog's owner, and includes Altres as a defendant, alleging that the company also is liable for the hostile work environment at the Waikiki restaurant and bar.

Altres Inc. President and CEO Barron Guss anticipates his company will be dismissed from the lawsuit.

“Altres is a staffing company and human resources company,” though Altres did not staff the employees in (the Señor Frog's) workplace,” he told the Star-Advertiser. The employees were “hired, directed, controlled, compensated and sometimes terminated, all by Señor Frog's. We provided administrative services only,” he said.

Altres’ role with Señor Frog's was “administrative employer services, so we will naturally be named (in such lawsuits). It’s up to the courts to sort it out, and they always do,” Guss said.

The company has not done business with Señor Frog's for about four years, after the restaurant did not renew Altres' contract.

Señor Frog's officials could not be reached for immediate comment.

The restaurant closed in August after its ownership was unable to work out a new lease agreement at Royal Hawaiian Center. The Waikiki store was one of more than a dozen operating in Mexico, the U.S. and the Caribbean.

This kind of thing happens way too much. Our boss, at my Waikiki Pizza Parlor, has a no tolerance policy so no one harasses me. Management can set rules and make them stick.

If it was one of my dtrs. that was being harrassed at that place of employment, I would go and monitor the situation and if my dtr. continues to tell me about being physically and emotionally harrassed, heck, I wouldn't wait this long but I would have her quit and I would definitely have her file a harassment suit asap. No excuse for this type of behavior and I am surprised that this situation went as long as it did......

That type of behavior is inexcusable, especially for management. But given the environment, I have to say I'm not surprised to hear about this.

This is nothing new in the business of nightclubs featuring scantly clad young Women. In some cases it's a double standard, but Unacceptable nonetheless. Women must make the deliberate effort to not give into even the slightest "sexual comment" labeled as just a joke. Or "you have to have a sense of humor in this company if you're going to make it"! Do not compromise your morals for money. Stay in school, acquire a marketable degree, and do your best in the competitive world. For that matter, places like strip clubs, Hooters, etc only set the inappropiate misguided standard for young impressionable Women, even mature one in their 30's, to think it is o.k. to use their body as a weapon of leverage or influence. Unfortunately in 3rd World countries this is the 1st option and maybe the only option. In America, we believe in ideals, and pratice these moral committments to our citizens of all ages, race, religion, and socioeconomic position. Men must behave and live a righteous life, Women must cherish their value and hold to their morals, even if it means standing alone in their convictions!!!

Hawaii seems especially bad with its strong Asian history and traditional mistreatment of women. I hear that all the time in Waikiki.

Albert/Alfred/Allie aka DUDE PRETENDING TO BE A GIRL. Once again you are full of SH*T. According to the Silent Witness National Initiative, the area you CLAIM to be from South Dakota has a domestic homicide rate (a good indicator of how women are treated) nearly twice that of Hawaii. Dude!! Even a 13-14 year old has the intelligence to get their facts straight before handing in their homework. You obviously are of EXTREMELY LOW INTELLIGENCE and it would not be able to successfully complete a high school basic composition course. Do yourself a favor!! Go back to school and complete your GED. Maybe then you'll be able to avoid making yourself look as dumb as you do.

Oh, so you're changing your "hometown" now. Why should anyone be surprised, but still doesn't matter cause any other state in the West would be even higher than SD. Hawaii's rate of domestic homicide ls among the lowest in the US. Like I said, go back to school, get your GED. Maybe you won't have to lie so much.

One Final Note, This type of case would be a perfect opportunity for a "Insider" to conduct an expose. Where is Undercover Boss when you Need it. It would have been so cool if any one of the girls involved in this was a owner of Senor Frogs, or a very high level senior share holder or something like that. No Pun intended with the word association senior share holder at Senor Frogs! You get my meaning though. Stop Harassment of any type and immediately start to live a better quality purpose driven life.

Undercover Boss had a similar episode where a manager of a Hooters restaurant was making them do all kinds of degrading things (tho not sexual in nature). The CEO of the company confronted him and eventually the manager quit.

I read the compaint above and it is certainly pretty damning. The EEOC has a dubious and poor reputation in this town. Anyone can bring suit through the EEOC and they generally take up any complaint because they have the time and inclination using taxpayer dollars without regard to frivolity or fraud potential. They operate under napoleonic code: guilty until proven other wise. That said, there are multiple witnesses and incidents that appear to be documented here. These are not vague and unspecific claims. While I hate to see the EEOC involved, Senor Frogs sounds like a despicable place to work.

I feel very bad for these women. It's not a good environment to begin with but they should not have to be subjected to harassment in this way. Yes it's ideal to stay in school, etc. but sometimes due to upbringing and life circumstances they're stuck with just trying to make a living, however they can. Terrible.
