A brush fire near a bird sanctuary on Hawaii island burned through four acres before firefighters were able to bring it under control Friday night.

The alarm for the fire at Keauhou Ranch in Volcano came in at 3:12 p.m. Friday. Firefighters using multiple tanker trucks and helicopters were able to get the fire 80 percent contained by nightfall, fire officials said.

Mop up operations will continue throughout today. The Keauhou Bird Sanctuary is near the burned acreage.
