Fresno State beats Hawaii handily

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 05:00 p.m. HST, Nov 03, 2012

The rivalry between Fresno State and Hawaii continued today at Bulldog Stadium in a Mountain West Conference football game in which the Bulldogs unleashed a 45-10 whipping on the Warriors.

Hawaii fell to 1-7 for the season and 0-5 in the MWC play. Fresno State is 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the MWC. After building a 39-point lead in the first half, the Bulldogs pulled a lot of their starters at the beginning of the second half on both sides of the football.

It slowed them down a bit, but the Bulldogs did manage to score the first points of the second half on a 32-yard field goal by Quentin Breshears to make it 45-3 Fresno State with 6:51 left in the third quarter.

Backup UH quarterback Cayman Shutter came in for a battered and bruised Sean Schroeder early in the fourth quarter against mostly Bulldogs backups and didn't distinguish himself. Schroeder struggled mightily before being lifted as Fresno State dominated in every phase of the game.

Jeremy Higgins also got some playing time under center for the Warriors. He completed three quick passes and led Hawaii down to the Fresno State 25. The Utah State transfer who graduated from Saint Louis School tried a long ball, but missed to stop his streak at three. UH running back John Lister took a third-and-4 handoff and drove to the Fresno State 5.

Higgins scored on the next play off a fake to Lister with 3:06 left in the game. Tyler Hadden added the PAT to make it 45-10.

The Bulldogs scored early and often out of its version of the run-and-shoot. Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Rashad Evans and Breshears added the PAT to make it 7-0 at the 9:31 mark of the first. Carr converted a third and 11 by hitting Isaiah Burse for a 56-yard gain to set up the first-and-goal score.

Carr played only the first half, completing 15 of 23 for 304 yards and four touchdowns.

Schroeder threw for no touchdowns and only 167 yards. He was hit and fumbled on the offensive series following Fresno's first score. Fresno State's Nikko Motta recovered it, giving the Bulldogs excellent field position in UH territory. On the first play, Carr threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Root off the flea-flicker, giving the Bulldogs a 14-0 advantage with 8:01 left in the first quarter after Breshears added the PAT.

Another three and out by UH and a shanked punt gave Fresno State the ball at the UH 40. It didn't take Carr long to drive the Bulldogs into scoring position once again. The Bulldogs scored on a 1-yard run by backup quarterback Greg Watson, Breshears' PAT making it 21-0 with 3:14 left in the first.

Fullback Robbie Rouse got into the act for Fresno State. After being held up on a fourth-and-3 play early in the first, he made up for it on a third and 1 by going 51 yards for the touchdown straight up the middle of the field. Breshears added the PAT to make it 28-0 Fresno State with 13:56 left in the half.

Hawaii finally put together a nice drive, setting up a 48-yard field goal by Hadden that just cleared the bar after Shutter originally dropped the snap, making the score 28-3 with 7:03 left in the half.

Fresno State wasted little time building an even bigger lead. The Bulldogs scored on the ensuing offensive series, going 73 yards on nine plays. The last one was a 45-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Davante Adams, and Breshears added the PAT to make it 35-3 with 3:17 left in the half.

The Bulldogs had a nice two-minute drill to put another score on the board. This time, it was a 31-yard touchdown pass from Carr to Burse that culminated a nine-play, 84-yard drive. Breshears added the PAT to make it 42-3 with 12 seconds left in the half.

what you fail to realize is, Fresno had players and stars (Rouse, Carr) comming back from last years team. Hawai has new starters at just about every position and thaks to June Jones, Mack didn't recruit many quality players. O-line all new with frosh and sophs, QB and RB's all new, recievers same but are run & shoot recievers used to adjusting routes on the fly, so running disciplined routes aren't their forte. Offense void of any stars. D-line other than Paipai, all new frosh/soph, LB's all new frosh/soph, DB's Tuilau and Edwards only returnees. Yeah we're terrible but are going through true rebuilding, unlike Fresno.

Agreed Wazdat and Nate. At least with a back-up, there's the element of surprise, especially with no game tape on the second and third stringers. At this point, Shroeder is too predictable. Actually agree with most of your sentiments *but* the more salient question which begs an answer was whether coach Chow gave *himself*, *his* staff and *his* team the best chance to win by sticking with a struggling, mistake-prone (3 T/Os today) QB for so long? Sure, it was mopup duty and the Bulldogs obviously wanted to end the game, but Higgins showed spark, composure and an ability to string completions when he engineered Hawaii's ONLY TD drive. THAT's what you call making the most of an opportunity. An opportunity that coach denied for 6 consecutive losses when QB conspicuously *regressed*, not improved. That's why many *loyal* fans are upset. Most didn't expect instant success. But most also didn't anticipate a coach who established his rep as a QB guru to tolerate such poor, demoralizing play from his QB *at the expense* of the team.

Don't even bring up Shutter......Why does Higgins take the #2 reps at practice ALL week and then Chow puts in Shutter after SS stinks it up again!!! There is s reason SS was the #3 QB at Duke...a school known for BASKETBALL!

Yes it's eary in his tenure, but I think Coach Chow is indicative of other coordinators turned head coaches; he's in over his head. Coordinators are architects, not evaluators of talent and how to design toi heir strengths ... if they have any. This team is completely inept from sideline to sideline and Schroeder is just plain horrible, HORRIBLE, bless his heart. I think Kahuku would route this team.

I've said before and I'll say it again. UH needs to move to Division II where the competition and level of play will be more suited to our reality. Trying to play with Division I teams is folly in the long term. We're just not situated to compete successfully at that level. Or just cancel the football program entirely and put more effort into academics.

This is just a bad football team on offense and defense. I'm glad at least two other quarterbacks besides Schoerder got to play. They were probably just as bad but at least they got a chance. I think the team will win only two games, hopefully the last one against South Alabama. Chow has to start getting more wins next season and more in his third year when he will get his recruits to play.

Coach Mac was fired last year for only winning 6 games. Under that premise, should he not be rehired in light of this year's train wreck of a win loss record?? 6 wins is looking better every week. I will keep expounding on the handling of David Graves. The expulsion of Graves was a microcosm of the lack of character of Coach Chow and his giant sized ego. Then his insistence to keep playing Schr. I'm afraid Coach Chow has lost the team and I hate to say it but he deserve this. However the players don't and they have my loyalty and respect.

He inherited a very so-so team. They were recruited to be a west coast passing team, and he tried to make them a running team. I think you need run blockers, fast runners, and a passing offense to redirect the rush. Either way, McMackin didn't get any stars. No speed, brutes, or man among boys. Why would you pay per view when you can get Alabama/LSU or Oregon?USC for free?

It seemed as though the line got tired of blocking for the qb. They looked disheartened. I believe they have enough playmakers to be at least competitive. It all starts with defense. Chow needs to step in and take command of this area asap if not he needs to make an overhaul right away. It does not matter -- the season is lost anyway .. can not get any worse.

Coach Norm, tonight you have restored my confidence in you as you finally let Schutter and Higgins play. I hope you can see that Jeremy makes quicker decisions, throws a quicker ball and can scramble. You've been starting the wrong lefty QB. Way to go Jeremy. St Louis has produced some very good QB's with Mariota and Higgins the latest in a long line of good QB's.

If you saw the MidWeek story on Mariota, the reason he did not start until senior year was because Higgins was so good that the coach wanted to stick with him as long as possible. Being older, Higgins finally graduated and then Mariota was given his chance. Having said that, it must mean that Higgins has equal or more talent than Mariota, and look at what Mariota is doing at Oregon. Of course, Oregon has better talent all around than UH and a MUCH better coaching staff (understatement), but even so, Mariota still has to make correct reads and be athletic enough to run that offense. It stands to reason that Higgins should be capable of the same, although his success level at UH will likely be much less, but still better than Schroeder. Interesting how Mariota winds up at Oregon while Higgins has to suffer at UH.

I believe the true frustration for the fans and I am sure for the coaches and our student/athletes are the lopsided scores. As a fan we would be accepting of some of the losses if we were into every game and not being blown out by half time. True new system for the offense and defense but something must be inherently wrong internally with this team to be so off. I believe we do have the players and we won last year which means to me that the current system is failing. Especially when the coaches are not putting our players into the right mind set to play this game. I support our student/athletes but I hope the coaches find the mojo that is missing. It starts with them.

what you fail to realize is, Fresno had players and stars (Rouse, Carr) comming back from last years team.

Hawaii faithful football fans. As UH rebuilds this year, get your football fix following Notre Dame and Oregon. Wouldn't it be great if the Manti Teo, the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year, ( Punahou) faces off against Marcus Mariota, 2010 Offense Player of the Year (St. Louis) for the National Championship! Great for Hawaii high school football players with National exposure. Eventually, UH will win and hopefully keep some, not all, blue chippers home.

To those with all the negative comments, what a bunch of idiots. Give the coaches and boys a chance to learn the system and grow up. There's a lot of young men who are making big adjustments and commitments to this program. And enough with the run and shoot its not the type of offense thats the problem. Would Alabama be even more unbeatable if they went to the run and shoot? If they would then Saban should be fired for not trying it. To all you ididots who have kids playing sports I feel sorry for their coaches if parents act the way they talk here. Your kids too must be a bunch of losers or are you one of those parents that keeps transfering them to different teams or schools so they can say they were a part of the winning team the easy way. Give the kids a break they're trying. No hawaiian style spirit from you Aholes.
