Hawaii County firefighters continued Saturday to battle a brush fire that started late Friday afternoon in the Keauhou Ranch area, officials said.

Crews arrived on scene just before 4 p.m. Friday to find roughly four acres of mixed ohia and koa grasslands engulfed in steadily growing flames, officials said.

Crews conducted water drops throughout the day using a nearby reservoir, and the fire was deemed 80 percent contained by nightfall, officials said.

When helicopter operations stopped, ground crews continued to work into the night to mop up and contain the perimeter. By midnight the fire was considered 95 percent contained, officials said.

Officials said that overnight crews worked to keep the fire from spreading and put down hot spots.

Mop-up operations and helicopter flights continued Saturday. The Keauhou Bird Sanctuary is near the burned acreage.

There were no evacuations.
