High surf advisory issued because of building north swell

Surf expected to reach heights of up to 16 feet from a building north swell has prompted a high surf advisory for Oahu and other islands.

National Weather Service forecasters say a north swell is building to advisory-level waves this morning on north and west facing shores of Kauai and Molokai, north and east shores of Oahu and north shores of Maui until about 6 p.m. Monday.

Waves on the north shores of Oahu, Kauai Molokai and Maui are rising to 12 to 16 foot heights, Surf along Oahu's east shores is expected to build to 6 to 10 feet today. West shores of Kauai and Molokai can expect to see 10 to 14 foot wave faces.

Forecasters say the west shores of Oahu, will be in the swell shadow and should not see large waves.

The swell is expected to build today and peak tonight and Monday.

The surf could produce dangerous waves and rip currents.
