Man charged with attempted murder in Kaimuki stabbing

Charles "Kealii" Amoy, 19, was charged with second-degree attempted murder on Sunday.

A 19-year-old man has been charged with stabbing his 70-year-old grandmother last week in her Waialae Avenue apartment.

Charles "Kealii" Amoy was charged with second-degree attempted murder on Sunday. His bail was set at $500,000.

Aileen H. Amoy was taken to Queen’s Medical Center with multiple stab wounds at 1 a.m. Friday. The stabbing occurred 3002 Waialae Ave., a three-story apartment building behind Sakura Restaurant & Pupu Bar.

Police said neighbors heard a woman screaming for help. 

The suspect was caught at about 6 p.m. Friday in the University area after police issued an alert about the stabbing. Amoy was arrested for investigation of second-degree attempted murder.

Friends said the victim had lived in the three-story building for more than 20 years and has always been there to help her grandson,

Mental illness is not something you can control, and is often misunderstood by the families trying to help that person out. If you saw the witness accounts on the news about his changing behavior in school and at the apartment, Amoy was displaying the classic signs of Schizophrenia, which for men manifests itself in their late teens to early twenties. As his mental state began deteriorating a few months ago, he needed medication and hospitalization. As caring and forgiving as his grandmother was, she would not have been able to help him without proper psychiatric treatment. Both his cognitive (ability to tell right from wrong) and volitional (ability to refrain from doing wrong) capacities were substantially impaired. This concept is really hard to comprehend and understand, unless you or a family member suffers from this illness, or if you work in the mental health field, of which I am peripherally involved.

"IF", and when they follow the prescription, and are willing to do as the Doctors state and don't mix their Meds. with Alcohol or Drugs or refuse to take them as prescribed. That's more than likely what happened in this instance, when Grandma finally learned how to say "NO", when he needed money for his next fix. Knowing the money would just contribute to his habit and buy more drugs. My prayers go out to grandma and her grandson.
