UH Manoa student reports lower campus assault

By Star-Advertiser staff

An assault on the lower campus early this morning has triggered a security alert at the University of Hawaii Manoa.

Campus Security said a male student was walking back to his room at the residence halls when three male suspects chased him and a fourth man grabbed him from behind at about 12:45 a.m. near the ROTC building on Lower Campus Road.

The suspects punched the student and cut him with an unknown object, campus security said.

The suspects fled out the Waialae Road gate.

Three suspects are described as men 18 to 20 years old weighing about 160 pounds with medium builds.

One suspect had shoulder-length hair and was wearing a baseball cap, t-shirt and jeans.

Two other suspects had crew cuts and wore t-shirts and jeans. One of the t-shirts had stripes, campus security said.

Why are these people being allowed to enter the campus area? Are these people fellow students or trespassers that are being allowed access to the campus without confirmation of their identitiies? Either way; accountablility is the key! How many security cameras are in place to record these instances? Are UH's security measures adequate enough to protect the students? Maybe more should be spent on increased security measures than Stevie Wonder concerts? Just a thought.......

No money left to beef-up security, the attorneys and consultants already took it all.

Too much crime in campus. HPD needs to put out men and women for a "sting" operation a few times a year.

State/UH/City/Private partnership needed urgently here. We must solve this with more street/walkway and building lights, more HPD and UH security patrols, more student education on smart walking behavior, more serious enforcement of the law to punish the perpetrators, and more media/PR stating how serious this is being handled (not after the fact reports). This is our flagship institution. Protect the students and the community.
