Inouye released from hospital after fall at his Maryland home

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 02:19 a.m. HST, Nov 16, 2012

Sen. Daniel K. Inouye sustained a minor cut to the back of his head following a fall at his home Thursday and was taken to the Bethesda Naval Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Inouye was released from the hospital and returned to his home in Maryland.

The 88-year-old Hawaii Democrat did not lose consciousness, a statement from his office said.

The World War II combat veteran wanted to put a bandage on and go to work. However, his family insisted he get it checked out.

Peter Boylan, Inouye's spokesman, said the senator would be available if any votes are taken on Capitol Hill today.

Inouye is the Senate's most senior member and, as president pro tempore of the Senate, is third in the line of succession to the presidency.

Dan had a minor fall. Monkeys fall from trees. Everyone is bound to trip and fall sometimes. I'm 60-something, and I also feel old age creeping up on me. Get well soon, Dan.

Be careful! Folks in their 80s and beyond are very frail - unavoidable fact of life and the aging process. Balance can be a key problem area and falls are both common and especially dangerous. Glad to hear this was just a minor deal. I just wish all Dan's constituents also had a health insurance plan that permitted visits to hospital for minor cuts.

Nothing personal against Day but I agree with you on the health plan. I spent 22 years in the Navy but Bethesda won't serve me. Uncle Sam shuffled me of to Medicare when I hit 65. Isn't Dan old enough for Medicare, maybe he should use that system and see how it's working.

And on another note, you've served your country and your state far more than most. It's okay to come home and enjoy some sunsets on the beach.

You know, I think, for him, being is DC IS his "sunsets on the beach." He must love being "the man" in the Senate. I hope that Hawaii has good people ready to take his place when the time comes. Imagine that Hirono will be our "senior" senator one day.

Hawaii is going to be in bad shape once Inouye retires/dies. He has brought in billions of dollars to the state as senator and chairman of the appropriations committee. He was also responsible for Pearl Harbor not shutting down. People of Hawaii do not really realize how much he has done for the state.
