Forecasters: Expect Kona winds and cloudy skies this weekend

Cloudy skies, Kona winds and the possibility of rain or even snow on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are in the forecast for this weekend.

National Weather Service forecasters expect high clouds to remain over the island through today. The clouds may be thick enough to bring light rain or snow to Hawaii island summits.

Weather systems north of Kauai have cut off the normal, cooling trade wind flow and forecasters expect weak Kona winds through Sunday.

So far, University of Hawaii vog projections show the vog mostly staying south of Oahu.

However, forecasters say the warm, moist Kona weather may bring some daytime showers to leeward areas through the weekend.

The trade winds should return Monday.

The light winds and a swell coming from the north should make for good surfing conditions on north shores.

The surf could be dangerous however on east shores of Hawaii island and Maui exposed to the north swell. Forecasters have issued a high surf advisory until 6 p.m. tonight. Surf is projected to reach 5 to 8 feet and could create hazardous rip currents.

Surf on Oahu is predicted to be 3 to 5 feet today. East shores can expect 2 to 3 feet today.
