SMU accepts Hawaii Bowl invite

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 04:22 p.m. HST, Nov 26, 2012

Southern Methodist has accepted an invitation to play in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, the school announced today.

The Mustangs (6-6), who won four of their last six games, will play either Fresno State (9-3, 7-1) or Boise State (9-2, 6-1) of the Mountain West Conference in the Dec. 24 game at Aloha Stadium.

Boise State concludes its regular season Saturday against Nevada.

"Having been affiliated with this bowl since its inception, I know that it is one of the best bowl experiences in college football," said SMU head coach June Jones, a former Hawaii (1999-2007) head coach. "I'm very excited for our players, staff and fans. This is a special experience."

The Mustangs finished second to Tulsa in Conference USA's West Division with a 5-3 league record.

The Mustangs, who had not gone to a bowl in 25 years before the 2009 Hawaii Bowl, will be making their fourth consecutive bowl appearance.

The only thing that would be better since Hawaii does not qualify is if Nevada could be the opponent. Then we sort of have a JJ vs. Rolo match-up even though Rolo isn't the HC.

Why do you get a .500 team to play in a BOWL GAME? How ridiculous is that!

June, June, come back June. That idiot Frazier is long gone. You turned around SMU's program just like you did with UH, oh how we've missed you. Please come back, the UH fans will start a collection to try and match SMU's salary, plus you can stay with me for free. Plus my cousin's friend's roommate's name is Lilly and she thinks your hot! Uncle Norm is a nice guy with a fine football mind and is a great OC, but he ain't no HC. Please, oh please come back!

How did he turn around the SMU program? Being .500 is good enough for you? Look at Junes Jones overall record as a head coach in the NFL and in college. He just isn't that good.

How many bowl games has UH been to the past 3 seasons? JJ not only got SMU to bowl games, they also won most of them. Before June got there, SMU was mired at the bottom of their conference standings every year.

This could be totally off base. Tulsa already securing the Conference USA championship game probably did not want to risk injuring their starters so could have played their 2nd team most of the game. If SMU did not win the game C-USA would have only 4 eligible teams. The conference had 6 bowls to fill.

He was through with UH. Can't some of you guys get it. He was chasing the money and there's nothing wrong with that. Even if UH paid him what Mac was making it wasn't enough. He got three time more if not more. Go ask him, there no such thing as loyalty in the business. It's called survival. If you boss was paying you 50K and someone offers you 2.5mil would you hang in there?

Why not an East Coast Team versus SMU? It would have a better match up, maybe a Big East, or ACC Team? If they were smart they would bring an East Coast team to help UH's recruiting, also tourism. If you bring in our competition for players (FSU and BSU) it doesn't help Hawaii football. Is the Bowl trying to save money on west coast travel??

he's doing the same thing at SMU that he did here! pack his schedule with home games and weak teams! just to get the WINNING record!

Word on the Pony board is that the Hawaii Bowl will be JJ's last game as coach for the Ponies. Since he's a builder of programs, would be a great challenge for him if he went to Idaho.

A .500 team playing in the Hawaii Bowl is shameful. There are better teams with better records out there. SMU was selected because June Jones is the head coach. Attendance will be poor and the National Television ratings will suffer.
