Portions of H-1, H-3 to close for HPD escort training

Portions of H-1 and H-3 freeways between Honolulu Airport and the Windward side will be shut down this afternoon and again Tuesday night so Honolulu police can conduct escort training.

The first closure will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. today and again from 8-9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Both sides of the roadways will be closed.

Portions of Kaneohe Bay Drive will also be closed, police said.

Motorists are advised to avoid these areas and use alternate routes.

While the Honolulu Police Department would not disclose the reason for the training, President Barack Obama and his family are again expected to visit Oahu and stay in Kailua during the Christmas break.

Actually TWO HPD officers have been killed in escort detail: One in training and the other actually crashing his motorcycle in a presidential motorcade when one of the presidents was in Honolulu. I don't think it was released to the public how the officer died in the training incident however the officer Favela, lost control of his bike on a wet road and broke his leg and unfortunately severed a major artery in his broken leg which he bled to death. If HPD is not stubborn and close minded like the current UH football coach, hopefully HPD escort detail would have learned from the TWO deaths and for this current escort detail, upgraded their BMW motorcycles to include both traction control and antilock brakes AND require those riders on escort detail to wear motorcycle specific pants and jackets that look like the standard issue uniform BUT have body armor pads such as hip and knee pads hidden in the clothes. They make em' ventilated so no excuse to not use these protective clothes in Hawaii weather. Like in a race, it is inevitable there will be other crashes as these officers in escort detail are pushing themselves and their bikes to their limits. The only thing that can and should be done is to require protective gear to increase the survivability of the crash and to utilize the latest in technology such as traction control on the bike, which is available with bikes they use
