Storm cancels flights, knocks out power on Kauai

By Star-Advertiser staff

POSTED:

Kauai bore the brunt of a weather front with thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain Tuesday night.

Jeff Powell, National Weather Service lead forecaster, said storm front is moving north and should clear Kauai by mid-afternoon.

“Kauai was the focus of the bad weather,” Powell said.

Oahu was slightly affected, Powell said, with the southwest part of Honolulu getting drenched.

Nearly three inches of rain fell on parts of Kauai with Waimea recording 2.9 inches during the past 12 hours.

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative reported “four of five small pockets of outages” including Hanapepe, Eleele and Kalaheo.

In Hanapepe Valley, the power outage has affected delivery of water from the island’s wells, Kauai County Department of Water reported.

While the work is being done, area residents are urged to conserve water and restrict water consumption to essential uses such as cooking, bathing, and toilet flushing, the Kauai water department said.

Kauai radio station KUAI was reportedly affected by the power outage.

This morning’s heavy rains also closed parts of Kapule Highway in Lihue for about an hour.

Hawaiian Airlines canceled multiple flights into and out of Lihue Airport Tuesday night.
