A Hawaii island man died Wednesday after a one-vehicle crash in south Kona.

Marcus Aickin, 38, of Ocean View, was driving a pickup truck north on Highway 11 shortly before 8:46 a.m. when it ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree near the 97-mile marker.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:53 a.m.

Police are requesting a coroner’s inquest to determine if the crash may have been caused by a medical condition.

Police investigators said an autopsy is scheduled today and they will await the outcome of the examination before determining if Aickin’s death was a traffic fatality.

Aickin was wearing a seat belt.
