A 59-year-old Maui man was killed after being hit by a car while crossing a street in Kahului Wednesday night.

Maui police said the victim was crossing Kaahumanu Avenue in a marked crosswalk fronting the Shell gas station at 6:18 p.m. when he was struck by a gray 2000 Toyota RAV4 driven by a 50-year-old Makawao resident.

The victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.

The identity of the man has not been released pending the notification of next of kin.

This is Maui County's 22th traffic fatality, compared with 19 the same time last year.
