Byron's Drive-In to close next year

Byron's Drive-In near Honolulu Airport, the last of a group of family-run restaurants serving Hawaii for generations, will close at the end of February.

Manager Ruth Arakaki confirmed the closure, but the Feb. 28 date is a bit uncertain, she said.

The quick-service restaurant is popular for its burgers slathered with customer-favorite red or yellow sauces, among other dishes, and is the last vestige of a restaurant dynasty established by the late Andy Wong and his wife Marian in the 1950s.

The restaurant's parent company, Pacific Food Services Inc., was informed that the landowner's plans will involve the demolition of the eatery, which opened in the mid-1960s.

The landowner has not yet responded to Star-Advertiser queries.

the landowner is making byrons close down so he can build an office business complex thats what i think i wonder if he owns the land where the gas station is next to byrons if he does he will close that down to and add another business complex with offices for rent which will be cheaper than business offices in waikiki so look for offices in waikiki moving to this new complex where byrons used to be. probally cheaper rent for office spaces that just my guess but will wait and see if i am right.

Why do you guys like Byron's? They are lousy. I ordered a steak takeout, when I returned to the hotel room, the steak had all fat and gristles and tough as heck. No, I didn't return it, I just didn't eat there anymore. Their food is 3rd rate or even worst. Did you see the cook drop the food on the floor and pick it up and put it back on the grill. I am so happy they will be closing.

I agree!! They have mediocre food, AT BEST, and the place always looks so shabby and dirty. I once ordered decaf coffee, and watched as the waitress mixed it from freeze dried instant. It was so special, it was exceptional!!!

Byron's is known for their ONO red/yellow sauce on burgers, FABULOUS Shrimp Burger with Cole Slaw & Tartar Sauce, JUICY Teri Steak sandwich and YUMMY Fried Rice Omelet...not to mention favorites of MANY repeat customers since the 60's. Its always a first stop upon arrival for transplants returning "home". I look at Byron's with fond memories and sadness that another icon will be lost. ANDY's Drive Inn Kailua (another Wong property) with its outstanding red roof viewable from the Pali Tunnel is now a O'Reillys Auto Parts...BOO! Sorry for you and Sue H. since you did not have the loving memories of a Byron's of yesteryear. BUT SERIOUSLY...who orders a steak at a fast food place? LOL
