UH announces Ohio State's Jay as new athletic director

Ben Jay, Ohio State's executive associate athletic director for finance and operations, has been named the University of Hawaii's athletic director, school officials announced Friday.

"I am delighted that Ben is joining us as UH athletics director, and know that he will be a great addition to our Manoa 'ohana with his vision and strong finance, accounting and compliance background," Manoa chancellor Tom Apple said n a news release. Apple chose Jay over University of California at Berkeley official Solomon "Solly" Fulp.

An 11-member search committee recommended Jay and Fulp as finalists to Apple. UH president M.R.C. Greenwood still needs to sign off on the choice. After that, UH will announce Jay's official start date, length of contract and salary, the release said.

Jay and Fulp were in town this week for face-to-face meetings with UH officials and coaches.

Jim Donovan was athletic director for more than four years when he was removed from the position in July. UH vice president Rockne Freitas has been serving as acting athletic director. Freitas, who returned today from a speaking engagement in New Zealand, did not apply for the job.

good choice. Managed the second largest athletic budget in the country. Neither Jay nor any of his compliance people had anything to do with TOSU getting sanctions. That was all on the players and Tressel.

Sanctions were caused by players and their head coach. Athletic administrators had nothing to do with it. Don't you know anything about tatoogate?

Wait a minute. We're the last to know? Why is this story breaking in Ohio and there's not a peep out of UH? Isn't this, like, something of interest to the community? There should have been a joint announcement. "Diane Chang, spokeswoman for the chancellor's office, said in an e-mail that UH would issue a 'media advisory' on the situation today." It's a "situation?" Already? He hasn't even started yet.

How does someone coming from a prestigioius conference such as the Big 10 and from Ohio St. University readjust successfully to a school from the Mountain West? The operating budgets are worlds apart; alumni support worlds apart; facilities worlds apart. I would be surprised if Mr. Jay makes a successful adjustment. This is not to say he is not qualified. I am sure his qualifications are above and beyond the criteria, and that he scored the highest in all measured categories for selection. But moving from a palace of the "Royal Family" to a humble abode takes someone special. Is he that man?

Ben, thank you for being willing to bring your skills and experience to UH, and to commit yourself to making a historically good Hawaii athletics program a much better one. As you can tell, there are a lot of folks here who care enough about the program to have strong opinions about it, which will sometimes present challenges for you, but is ultimately a good thing. Aloha and welcome!

Director of Finance and Operations. On paper, a good start with that base of knowledge that appears applicable to the position. It's a wait and see I suppose. I'm sure he's a man who looks before he leaps to decisions. Good luck.
