Hawaii County escapee charged

By Star-Advertiser staff

Hawaii County authorities charged Jarvis Higa in connection with his escape from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center on Wednesday.

Higa, 35, is charged with escape in the first degree, kidnapping, second degree assault, second degree robbery, criminal property damage and car theft.

Higa is on of two men who escaped from the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

A team of about 15 law enforcement officers captured him Friday at about 8:15 p.m. at a home in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Kau.

The other escapee, Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar, 31, remains at large.

Police began looking for Higa in Ocean View, a large subdivision just south of Manuka State Park, earlier Friday after receiving a tip.

Higa is being held at the Hilo Police Station without bail. He will likely be arraigned on his charges on Monday at Hilo District Court.

Higa is being detained without bail.

Higa and Jeffries-Hamar escaped from the Hilo jail Wednesday morning after overpowering and assaulting a corrections officer and taking off in the jail librarian's car, police said.

Maybe I watch too much criminal vs law enforcement shows on TV, but...WHAT TOOK EVERYONE SO LONG TO CAPTURE THIS GUY? Do we need the Dog Chapman (the Bounty Hunter) to be hired?

They caught him in less than a week in a 4,000 square mile area. Are you seriously complaining about this?

Wonder if there will be aiding and abetting charges filed, if someone was providing shelter to this felon. This individual has brought much grief to his family and yet he is determine to hurt them even more by his criminal actions. Lolo with no senses at all. He got cheated when they passed out brains.
