Man dies in Waikele after attempted murder-suicide

LAST UPDATED: 06:04 p.m. HST, Dec 10, 2012

A 23-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital after her husband allegedly assaulted her multiple times with a hammer at their Waipahu home over the weekend before he fled and jumped off an overpass.

Anthony Kaai, 40, died at a hospital from multiple blunt force injuries from the impact in the fall, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner's office. His death was classified as a suicide.

The attack occurred sometime before 11 p.m. Sunday. The couple lived in a two-story home on a quiet cul-de-sac on Apii Street.

A neighbor said he didn't hear anyone arguing Sunday night and was only awaken by sirens and flashing lights from first responders.

Paramedics took the 23-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition. She was upgraded to serious condition.

Police shut down Hiapo Street between Paiwa and Kuhaulua streets during the investigation.

967972005 what does that have to do with the validity of what 8082062424 said? That fact can be found by searching for statistics by state.

actually statistics of murder vs population are in the same range over the past 5 years for both Hawaii and North Dakota. For someone posing as a college student you seem to have great difficulty with facts

Allie u no doubt heard of the Kansas City Chiefs story whereby the football player shot to death his 22-year old girlfriend, then went to Arrowhead Stadium, and shot himself in the head. That incident occurred just three weeks ago. Now this happening in Hawaii Nei. Thoughts of therapy are needed. That is to say, not that we are sometimes off our rocker however when disagreements happen, murder-suicide is not the option. Our deep condolences to the man and a hope for a quick recovery from our HSA online forum community.

oh, allie. prior to the women's movement, men abusing women was the norm, not the exception, and would never make the news. reporting is going up, not the incidences themselves.

Sad, sad sad, not sure if this was the case here but some women staying with men who abuse them is contrary to how I believe people should live their lives. I kind of understand their mindset (finances, scared to be alone, kids, scared to leave) but you only live once, no need to waste it on someone who will abuse you.

The abusers are very careful in the beginning of a relationship. And you may leave the abuser on average as many as sixteen times. But by the time you give up hope in the abuser to be able to change you have an angry person who will kill you. Sometimes the only way out is to out live your abuser,as in this case and I say congratulations to the abused who out lived the abuser.

Everyone has a right to be free from abuse. Outliving your abuser shouldn't be the only option. I still think there's more women (and men) in abusive relationships can do to help themselves. I know it's not easy but sometimes you just have to fight for yourself.
