Alaska Airlines’ “Paint the Plane” contest is now open for public voting online.

The three top entries were chosen from among some 2,700 entries from around the state, and were submitted by Sophia Cleek, a sixth grader at Kapolei Middle School, and Aaron Nee, a junior at Kaiser High School on the Island of Oahu, and by Izabela Hamilton, a senior at Seabury Hall on the Island of Maui.

Designs depict a voyaging canoe traversing the islands around various marine life; a voyaging canoe, hibiscus, and island chain with the words, “Spirit of the Islands;” and male and female hula dancers against a backdrop of ocean waves and mountain cliffs.

Residents have until Dec. 18 to vote, and results will help the airline determine the winner. The winning student will receive a trip for four to any Alaska Airlines destination and a $5,000 scholarship.

Nice designs for an airplane but if I saw this plane in the air, all I would think of is a plane from Hawaii or Tahiti. Where are the whales, glaciers, sled dogs and ship ports and snow covered mountains. I been to Alaska and its cold. These designs make you feel warm on a sunny beach. I wish my kids would of known about the design. Fantastic work though.

The contest was to have a Hawaii keiki design a plane in honor of the Aloha State. From the Alaska Airlines "Paint The Plane" website: Alaska Airlines is proud to serve the Hawaiian Islands. Like our namesake state of Alaska, Hawai‘i has a unique geography, people and culture you’ll find nowhere else. For the past five years, we’ve been excited to be a part of the community in the Islands and we want to share that spirit with the rest of the world. To do that, we invited Hawai‘i’s keiki to help design one of our airplanes in honor of the Aloha State.
