LAST UPDATED: 10:05 a.m. HST, Dec 13, 2012

A 56-year-old Makiki man, apparently angered by the actions of a motorist, allegedly used his cane to break the taillight of the victim’s car and then assaulted the driver, according to police.

Police said the suspect was in marked crosswalk on Lusitana Street Wednesday afternoon when the motorist suddenly stopped before the crosswalk.

The suspect used his cane to break a taillight on the driver’s car, then illegally entered the car and allegedly assaulted the driver, police said.

The suspect was arrested on a charge of unauthorized entry into a private vehicle and fourth-degree criminal property damage.

Is it wild in North Dakota, or any other place in the U.S.? Or do you just want to portray Hawaii in a bad light? We're on to you, allie. You should seriously think about leaving Hawaii. You don't like this place or the people. Why stay? Because of GOVERNMENT financial aid to students?

the driver probablly dismissed the fact that the OLDER DISABLED man was in the cross walk which happens often. but he must have stopped shortly after the crosswalk, and unko got his revenge. i would have done the same thing. too many times drivers dismiss the fact that PEDESTRIANS have right of way. GO GEEV 'UM UNKO! SLO DOWN U $TUPID DRIVERS, IF U LATE, GET A EARLIER START, WHERE U GUYS GOTTA GO, WE ON A ISLAND - GO MAINLAND U LIKE DRIVE FAST

does it make sense?? why would unko walk to the back of the car and bust the TAILGATE LIGHTS? why not the head lights? so HE MUST HAVE STOPPED SHORTLY AFTER THE XWALK, or someone got their story all kapakahi. either way, i still suport unkos decision.

How do you know the old man wasn't so arrogant that he started crossing even when the car was too close to do so. Even if there is a crosswalk (no traffic light), you still need to wait till traffic clears.

it says the driver stopped before the crosswalk. Granted, he could have skidded for 50 yards before coming to a stop. But he stopped, which is more than a lot of people do. I can't count the times I've had people suddenly turn and step into a crosswalk in front of me when only seconds before they were walking parallel to the road on the sidewalk. Pedestrians need to exercise common sense, too, and not rely on some lines on the road to keep them safe. Stay out of the road until there's a break in traffic, then cross. Playing chicken with cars is a fool's game, even if you do have the right of way.

From what I've seen for some time, most pedestrians bring these incidents upon themselves. Curtesy and common sense should work both ways.

There are too many impatient drivers out there who can't wait a few seconds to let a pedestrian cross safely. I walk pretty fast, but I still have come across drivers who creep forward toward me as I'm on a sidewalk or in a crosswalk, or who stop their cars right in front of me and block my way because they apparently don't want to wait two seconds for me to cross in front of them. Maybe those drivers think that because they're in a car, there's nothing you can do, until they come across a guy like this who's had enough.

So he broke the tail light, not the headlight. If the car stopped suddenly at the crosswalk, the pedestrian walked to the back of the vehicle and caused the damage. Sometimes, lights change and we have to decelerate rapidly. Anger does not give someone the right to damage another person's property.

you know what i hate? when pedestrians cross marked crosswalks when the DON'T WALK signal is flashing and the timer is counting down. that jams up traffic and a lot of times they will RUN into the crosswalk in front of you as you are turning because they know they don't have much time to cross. pedestrians need to be respectful of drivers too!

If police really wanted to make some money, all they have to do is watch the crosswalks. Tickets galore, especially pedestrians.
